ABOUT ME
I began clogging as a child in elementary school and found a local group in Huntington, WV in a dilapidated and closed Altizer school to expand and learn clogging. During the 1980s, the River Cities Cloggers were the only group around and welcomed new students in Altizer. Myself and my parents joined- but I was a natural, though my parents had two left feet.
After just 8 weeks in the beginner series, I was invited to the performance and competition team and performed traditional and hoedown style clogging at competitions in NC and SC. After a few successful years, River Cities Cloggers retired and I stopped clogging for nearly 35 years. IÂ finished school, earned my BSN.in Nursing and began my career as a Registered Nurse. In 2021, during a family vacation to Pigeon Forge, TN, I was re-inspired watching clogging at a dinner show.
Returning home, I joined the Southern Stompers Cloggers in West Hamlin, WV. After a year, I joined fellow dancers that formed the new Guyan River Cloggers of Ranger, WV, as the Southern Stompers Retired. I was invited to join their (GRC) performance team and quickly promoted to instructor, then Co-Director.
I continue to teach weekly classes, mentor beginners, and organize local performances while also volunteers my time each Sunday for two hours dedicated to improving the beginner cloggers outside of practice time. I opened and directed the Hurricane WV beginners class and graded 13 new students in a new location for Guyan River Cloggers. Of notable news, I instrumental in having clogging recognized as August 8, 2024 as the WV Recognition of the National/International Day of clogging with a state procolmation by the WV governor. At 46, I performed with GRC and came home withan NCHC National Clogging Championships at Gaylord Opryland Hotel with a National Championship Team Title, Two 1st place National finishes and one 5th place position in National Amature Traditional line. Guyan River Cloggers represented Lincoln County, WV.
I’m a decorated clogger, instructor, choreographer, and team co-director. My work with Guyan River Cloggers and WV Clogging Company has influenced dancers across the Eastern U.S. to join the folk tradition of clogging and I enjoy sharing what I learn with others.

My Dance Teams
We are a not-for-profit dance organization based in rural Appalachia. Our group offers clogging classes, performance & competition opportunities, cultural education, and community engagement at no cost to families. We serve children and families in our area with a strong focus on accessibility and heritage.
The Guyan River Cloggers was founded to ensure every child—regardless of financial background—has access to the arts. We are dedicated to preserving the cherished Appalachian tradition of clogging while making it accessible, inclusive, and relevant for today’s youth.
Our programs include:
•Free clogging classes for all skill levels
•Performances at local and regional events
•Participation in dance competitions
•Outreach in schools and community centers
•Distribution of clogging shoes, costumes, and travel support
While rooted in traditional Appalachian clogging, we’re reimagining the art form by blending it with modern music and choreography. This innovative approach keeps the dance fresh, engaging, and appealing to younger generations—ensuring it thrives for years to come.
Unlike many dance studios that charge high fees or focus solely on competition, the Guyan River Cloggers prioritize cultural preservation and community access. We come from a small, economically challenged area, yet our passion, creativity, and commitment run deep. Our mission goes beyond dance—we’re building pride, resilience, and opportunity through the power of culture and movement.
Lincoln County is a place of resilience. But we are also a place of limited opportunities, especially when it comes to youth enrichment and the arts. That’s exactly why the Guyan River Cloggers exist, to fill a gap, to give these kids something to be part of, and to help them hold tight to their culture while reaching for bigger dreams.
This program is more than dance steps. It’s life lessons, discipline, teamwork, and joy. It gives our youth a reason to stay engaged, a way to stay out of trouble, and a chance to be seen, valued, and celebrated.
